TOURIST ATTRACTIONS


Sucre has innumerable tourist attractions that are visited daily by national and international tourists. The most well known are the following:

CASA DE LA LIBERTAD
It is considered the most important National Historic Monument, because it was here that the Acta de la Independencia de Bolivia was signed on August 6th 1825.
Important documents and historic objects are on display here.

CONVENTO Y MUSEO DE LA RECOLETA
This convent was founded in 1600 by Fray Francisco de Morales, with the name of Our Lady de Sion de la Recoleccion. It is situated on a hill from which you have a great view of the city.

You can visit this colonial style building, the museum of religious art and the famous Silleria del Coro de la Iglesia.

LA CATEDRAL METROPOLITANA
The construction of this great temple began in 1551 under the supervision of the architect Juan de Veramendi. This Cathedral has three lateral aisles with two doorways engraved in stone, a three part tower that ends in the shape of a pyramid, and a cross.

The CAPILLA DE LA VIRGEN DE GUADALUPE was built from 1616 to 1625, located beside the Cathedral, where you can see the extraordinary image of the Virgin.

The RELOJ DE LA TORRE was bought in London in 1765 and placed in its current location in 1772.

The MUSEO CATEDRALICIO was founded by Monseñor Pierini in 1938. It possesses a large amount of religious and liturgical objects, paintings by the famous painter Bitti and others.

MUSEO UNIVERSITARIO “CHARCAS”
It was founded in 1939 as a part of association of Bellas Artes. Currently it consists of four areas or museums: Colonial, Anthropology, Folkloric, and modern Art.

The first consist of colonial works of art, from private collections and extraordinary paintings such as those of the famous painter Mechor Perez de Holguin.

MUSEO DR. GUTIERREZ VALENZUELA
This museum has a collection of works of art from the nineteenth century, Luis XV style furniture, crystal chandeliers, sculptures made of bronze, marble, glass, and other materials.

IGLESIA Y MUSEO SANTA CLARA
The museum occupies what used to be the Coro alto of the church of Santa Clara, where the objects that are on display correspond to the patrimony of the Convent founded in 1636. In this museum one of the biggest attractions is the church organ, made by Don Pedro de las Casas.

MUSEO DE ARTE TEXTIL Y ETNOGRAFICO “ASUR”
This museum, shows in detail the process of the vernacular fabric of the communities of Jalka and Tarabuco, where you can observe beautiful samples, you can also observe the weavers at work, people who are responsible for this current ancestral art.

MUSEO DE ETNOGRAFIA Y FOLKLORE, MUSEF
This museum exhibits the diverse anthropology and ethnographic of Bolivia through its thematic rooms with samples of culture, ethnic groups, masks, and video exposition.

MUSEO HISTORICO MILITAR DE LA NACION MARISCAL SUCRE
This museum occupies the ex Convent of San Francisco Church, that since the beginning, of the republic became the Military Headquarters.

It is a place where you can learn about the chronological history of the Republic of Bolivia.

CAL ORKO AND THE DINOSAUR TRACKS
A few minutes from the city of Sucre, you can see the largest display of dinosaur tracks in the world. The impressive cliff of Cal Orck’o (hill of calcium), reveals its secrets of diverse species of these incredible animals, that disappeared over 65 million years ago.

The PARQUE CRETACICO gives you the chance to get to know these animals in of the best natural settings. You can see a camotaurus, being stalked by a ceratopsio, a very strong anquilosaurus, an impressive tyrannosaurus, a terrifying tyrannosaurus, reptiles, primitive snakes, crocodiles, and giant turtles that complete this adventure.

 

 

 

EL CASTILLO DE LA GLORIETA
About 8 km on the road to Potosí, is the royal residence of the Glorieta, which architecture incorporates various styles such as: barroco, Venetian, Gothic English, Gothic French, Arab, Byzantium Russian, and toscazo that give it a peculiar architecture.

It was Prince Francisco Argandoña, one of the owners of the tin deposits at the end of the 19th century, who had the architect Antonio Camponovo build the royal building in 1897.

TARABUCO
This town is located 64 km from the city of Sucre, at an altitude of 3,284 meters above sea level and with a temperature between ten and twenty-five degrees Celsius.

In Tarabuco every Sunday outlying communities gather for a fair where they exchange their products. The town turns into a big market where the colourful dress of the people creates a very colourful attraction for those visiting the town.

The third Sunday of March of every year is the PUJLLAY DE TARABUCO, one of the most well known and important fiestas in Bolivia.
